EMMA
Emma grew up unconventionally. Surrounded by artists
and musicians. She studied art and sculpture at Hastings college of art, and after living in West Africa, trained and worked as Montessori Teacher. After marrying and having children Emma decided to commit to creative passions and
become a full time artist.
She has sold many of her abstract and figurative work through private sales and been commissioned to illustrate
a book of short stories, to be published in Autumn 2007
Artist's statement
I love the whole experience of freedom I feel when I paint. To me, it's the biggest treat to really get stuck in with my hands, and experiment with colours and textures on the canvas.
When I work with paint I am reminded that it's so much
fun to be tactile, it's incredibly sensuous.
I often put a pallet of colours together to create a mood or scene, working in layers of acrylic or water based paints for their flexibility and quick drying time. I use rollers, brushes, and my hands, to move the paint around.
I work in short bursts giving time for the paint to dry then working and building on the next layer, using a water sprayer to create smoothness, this also adds an unexpected element as the water travels over the canvas, naturally challenging the composition.
I am currently exploring dramatic sky scapes, this is appealing to my interest in light, texture, capturing a moment or creating an imaginary scene that expresses a feeling.
The sky is constantly changing and part of the joy of living in England is the abundance of weather.
I draw on my life's experiences to guide my development as an artist and mature my techniques.
To expand and build organically, an idea, a colour scheme, a mood, or a feeling with colour is exciting. I love painting on a big scale, it suits my theatrical nature.
Enjoy!
